The athlete recorded her personal best of one minute 54.61 seconds last year in the British capital.

Keely Hodgkinson concluded her 800m season with a triumph at the women-only Athlos event in New York on Friday night.

{The reigning Olympic champion, who earned bronze at the global championships last month, dominated an outstanding victory in 1:56.53 in what was only her sixth race in a year affected by a hamstring injury.

Compatriot and global silver winner Georgia Bell took the runner-up spot again in 1:58.33, while the athlete from St Vincent Shafiqua M. (one minute 58.57) claimed third.

"I've barely raced this season so it was likely less of a struggle for me to compete and want to give it something," stated Hodgkinson.

"The atmosphere out there is crazy so it was extremely enjoyable."

The women-only meet filled Icahn Stadium in its second year, bringing a festive vibe to traditional track, with musical performances and special crowns substituting traditional winners' medals.

The 23-times tennis major winner Serena Williams, who is married to Athlos founder Alexis O., was on hand to award the winners with their tiaras.

Last year's winners received sixty thousand dollars (£44,603) - one of the largest prize purses in athletics.

The competition also drew some of the sport's biggest names, as the Kenyan three-time Olympic gold medallist and global record breaker Faith Kipyegon triumphed in the mile race, finishing in 4:17.78.

American Brittany B., the 200m bronze winner from last year's Paris Olympics, won the sprint double.
